1/15/2024 0 Comments 300 blackout subsonic ammo range![]() ![]() Wait, what? That guy killed a CAPE BUFFALO with a semi-auto rifle with a tiny 12-inch barrel? Suddenly, any hunter’s interest is piqued. Then, you see photos like one below, and you say. If you value flat-shooting traditional hunting rounds, then the above table would end your interest in 8.6 Blackout. The design allows for shorter barrels and subsonic ammunition to be used.ĭespite its uniqueness, the western hunter will struggle mightily to understand the 8.6 Blackout after seeing the following table. The cartridge is unique for its radical 1:3 twist rate which produces extreme rotational energy to aid its terminal performance and allows it to shoot accurately with subsonic ammunition. 338 caliber bullets at modest supersonic or quiet subsonic speeds for hunting or self defense. In essence, 8.6 Blackout is designed to shoot heavy. Don't use subsonic SMK ammo. When considering the 8.6 Blackout, the wrong question to ask is “Is it better than what we already have?” The right question to ask is “Is this the coolest cartridge design on the market?” The answer to the first question is “only for specific use cases.” The answer to the second question is, unquestionably, “YES!” TLDR - use the linked calculator to find your zero distance. You'll ring later for sure but you'll hopefully be alive to be annoyed by it. With adrenaline pumping the sonic crack will not deafen you I promise. If you can not find or afford these types of rounds please use supersonic for your own safety. All make awesome (but expensive) rounds specifically made to expand at subsonic velocities. Some I know of are Lehigh defense, maker, and discreet ballistics. HOWEVER, good expanding subsonic ammo is available and is completely capable of being used in a home defense role. A heart or head shot will still kill but in a stressful situation good ammo can account for less than perfect shots. They pale in comparison to super sonic ammo in every way. They do but they don't expand or transfer energy well. This is where everyone comes out of the wood works to scream subs don't kill people. I would recommend zeroing at 16 yards then confirming at 96 as 16 yards is so close you wont get a perfect zero.Īs for using subs for home defense, please do not use off the shelf 220 smk ammo. If you want to get technical you be 2.5 inch low at 1 yard, spot on at 16 yards, around 2 inch high at the 50 yard mark, back on at 96, and 2.5 low at 110 yards. That means with this zero if I aimed center mass on a 5 in plate I would be able to hit it from 0 yards to 109 yards with no correction. It also tells me my max point blank range with this set up will be 109 yards. Putting this into the calculator it tells me to do a near zero at 16 yards which also means a far zero of 96 yard. 42 coefficient and I used 1050 fps as I don't have actual data on hand. So my gun with a standard height sight is 2.5 in bore height, my rounds have a. I use 5 in as it ensures a head shot tho you could press it to 7 if you want as that is the average height of a face in the united states. You pick the size but for the example I'll use my gun and a 5in target to explain. What this calculator does is tell you the best range to zero at so that you will hit a target of a given size with no holds. You'll need to know your bore height (measure center of bore to center of optic) ballistic coefficient which depends on your bullet (Google it), and your velocity (if you don't have a Chrono use 1050 for subs). The best way to figure out what youre asking is to use a point blank ballistic calculator which can be found here, Please read what I say then do your own research to confirm as always but here we go. Having been in the profession of carrying a gun for the last 10ish years and being a huge ballistic nerd I try to chime in with information when I can. ![]()
